Vaping: The Gorilla in the Mist

Major news services around the country have been reporting on the vaping craze that has hit teenage consumers with particular force.

In the September 12 issue of USA Today, the “Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb declared youth vaping an “epidemic,” and said the agency will halt sales of flavored electronic cigarettes if the major manufacturers can’t prove they are doing enough to keep them out of the hands of children and teens.”

Over the past few years, as a school community, we have heard and seen the increase in vaping, including the use of devices made by manufacturers such as Juul, for high-school age students. Just to clarify what vaping is, here is information from the FDA

“Vapes, vaporizers, vape pens, hookah pens, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or e-cigs), and e-pipes are some of the many terms used to describe electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).

“These products use a liquid “e-liquid” that may contain nicotine [and/or cannabis oil], as well as varying compositions of flavorings, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and other ingredients. The liquid is heated into an aerosol that the user inhales.

“ENDS may be manufactured to look like conventional cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. Some resemble pens or other everyday items.”
