dTHS Teacher Feature: Joy Coe

Let’s get to know one of our Math teachers, Joy Coe.

Q: Where did you go to school and what degree did you earn?
A: I received a BA in Mathematics at Cal State Fullerton.

Q: Why did you decide to become a teacher?
A: When I was a student in high school I loved helping my friends and other students with their homework. I began tutoring many students in math. Since math is a challenging subject, it was fun for me to help people through that challenge.

Q: What started your love for math?
A: In 4th grade, my math/science teacher would often tell stories about famous science or math philosophers. One day my teacher was talking about a Pierre de Fermat, a French philosopher trying to prove a theorem that had been unproven for 350 years. I thought it was so neat that there was this big mystery around a math equation. That is what sparked my interest in math.

Q: What classes do you teach?
A: I teach…
•    Statistics
•    Geometry
•    Algebra 2

Q: Why did you choose to work at dTHS?
A: When I came in for an interview at de Toledo, I was immensely impressed by the academic rigor, students, and community. I immediately thought, “Yep, let’s do this.” I am so happy to be working at dTHS. It was a very positive move for me.

Q: What do you love about dTHS?
A: The community, students, and faculty have been great! I love the academic rigor and that I can push my students to do their best. I can see there is a lot of heart at the school — a lot of good people who care and want dTHS to thrive and be successful.

Q: What is your teaching style?
A: I do my best to try to entertain the students as much as I can while teaching them the lesson. I like to make sure my students are on board and understand the material while enjoying what they are learning.

Q: Do you have a vision for mathematics classes at dTHS?
A: I am very excited about my vision for Mathematics at dTHS! Next year, I am looking into teaching a brand new AP Statistics class.

Q: What is your favorite activity to do outside of work?
A: During my free time I love hiking and running. I also have a 2-year-old son. I spend a lot of family time together with my husband and son.

Q: What is your favorite food?
A: I love ice cream! My go-to flavors are mint chip and chocolate.
