Boys Varsity Baseball mercies another opponent; beats Milken 10-0

Boys Varsity Baseball (4-1 overall)

de Toledo 10 - Milken 0 (F/5 - Mercy)

The Jaguar bats came alive in the fourth inning with seven runs crossing home plate to give de Toledo an overwhelming victory over Milken, 10-0. Already up 3-0 to start the inning, the Jaguars led off the bottom of the fourth with two straight walks by Aidan Schenck and Jacob Willinger. Jesse Spencer came to the plate with men on first and second and laid down a pristine sacrifice bunt, after the runners had already aggressively taken off, to score Schenck and to advance Willinger to third. That aggressive baserunning has been a common theme in the early season, as de Toledo swiped seven bags on the day. Adam Neinstein (2-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 SB) followed by lining one up the middle of the field to bring Willinger home. Ethan Stubington (1-1, 2 R, 3 SB, 2 BB) followed suit, drilling a single between short and second to advance Neinstein to third. During Sam Koeppel’s at-bat, Stubington fled for second to put both runners in scoring position. Koeppel was then promptly walked during the at-bat to load the bases for de Toledo. Jared Browne then smacked a fly ball to right field that was dropped by the outfielder, allowing Neinstein to score with the other two runners moving up a base. Adam Schreiber then brought Stubington home on a single to left field to bring the score to 7-0. The finishing punch was delivered by Omri Alon (1-3, 3 RBI) with the bases stacked, doubling on a liner to left field, clearing the bases for a commanding ten-run lead.

Starting pitcher Ethan Stubington shut down the Milken offense, holding them to zero runs in his five innings pitched. Stubington got ahead of the Wildcat batters, throwing first-pitch strikes on 75% of the batters’ plate appearances. His ability to lead off the at-bat with strikes aided him in securing seven strikeouts, while only walking two Wildcats. Milken only had six players reach base in the game, and two of those baserunners were picked off by Stubington whose quick turn to first baseman Jacob Willinger proved to be a weapon.
