Boys Varsity Baseball drubs YULA 8-0; Boys Varsity Volleyball finishes in 4th at the Milken Spikeout Tournament

Boys Varsity Baseball (8-4 overall, 5-3 league)

de Toledo 8 - YULA 0

The Jaguars composed a complete game, expelling all of their talent in an 8-0 victory over YULA. The team’s success started in the bottom of the first inning, in which de Toledo scored half of their runs. Sam Koeppel started things for the Jaguars by lining a single to center field. With Adam Neinstein at the plate, Koeppel successfully fled first for second base. Neinstein then bunted Koeppel over to third, while scampering safely to first. Neinstein followed by mimicking Koeppel in swiping second base to put both runners in scoring position. Jared Browne (2-4, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 H w/ RISP) came through, with the coaches calling for an aggressive style on the base paths, by smacking a line drive to center that brought Koeppel home for the opening run on the game. Ethan Stubington (2-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB) then hit a single, one of the eight singles cracked by the Jaguar batters, to right field to score both Neinstein and Browne for the three-run lead. The fourth and final run of the inning was executed by Jesse Spencer, who hit a ground out to short, but it allowed Stubington ample time to reach home to widen an already imposing gap.

Jacob Willinger gave the Panthers no leeway, despite being given a four-run lead entering the top of the second inning. Willinger was as composed as can be, breezing through the YULA lineup. He axed 14 Panthers in three pitchers or less, got rid of six leadoff hitters over the seven innings he pitched, drew outs to the first two batters of the inning in four of those innings, and went 1-2-3 against YULA in three of those innings. Willinger was unhittable, as he gave up a single hit and struck out eight batters, while only walking two. All in all, the Panthers could not touch Willinger, as they batted a measly .042 against him on the afternoon.

The Jaguars then struck quickly in the opening round of the playoffs, disposing of Shalhevet in two straight sets. The team faced a daunting St. Monica Catholic squad, one that eventually won the tournament championship, in the following match, losing two consecutive sets.
