Boys Varsity Baseball sweeps the season series against Oakwood, 13-3

Boys Varsity Baseball (10-4 overall, 7-3 league)

de Toledo 13 - Oakwood 3

The Jaguars silenced Oakwood for the second time this week, claiming sole possession of third place in the Liberty League, good enough for an automatic qualification for the Division 6 playoffs. Whereas de Toledo jumped out of the gate to stun the Gorillas in their match on Tuesday, it took a little longer for their offense to stoke on Thursday, but when it got started, it could not be stopped. The Jaguars started the top of the fourth inning, already with a 2-1 lead, with a bang, a Jacob Willinger (2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B, HR, SB) round-tripper, which was the first home run of the season for the team. The next two batters committed outs, but akin to the prior game, the Jaguars were not let down by the hole and instead hit into a slew of 2-out RBIs. Omri Alon (2-4, 2 R, 3 SB) kept the inning going by hitting a single to left field, before stealing all of the bases on his way home to give de Toledo a 4-1 gap. Sam Koeppel (2-4, 2 R, 4 RBI, 2 2B, 2 SB) followed by reaching first base on an error by the pitcher, and Jared Browne followed Koeppel by getting beamed by the pitcher for the free base. With men on first and second, Ethan Stubington (2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB) cracked a hard grounder up the middle to center field, which scored Koeppel and advanced Browne. Carson Kirshbaum (2-5, 2 RBI, 2 2B) then cleared the bases with a double to right field to extend the de Toledo lead to six runs. Not that it was needed, but the Jaguars put up four more insurance runs in the final frame to put the game completely out of reach. Adam Neinstein was a terror in that inning and throughout the game with a 2-4 showing with three runs, two RBI, a double, and three stolen bases.

Willinger, the slugger of the day, was on the hill for the Jaguars for six of the game’s seven innings. He gave up two earned runs, while striking out seven batters and only walking two. This most recent win adds to his team-best win total of five games.
