San Diego Lions Baseball Tournament Game 2 Recap: de Toledo 10 - High Tech High San Diego 2

The Jaguars automatically advance to the semifinal round of the Lions Tournament after a convincing 10-2 victory

Boys Varsity Baseball (12-4 overall, 7-3 league)

de Toledo 10 - High Tech High San Diego 2 (Lions Tournament Division 2A Pool Play)

After scraping by Channel Islands in their first game of the tournament, the Jaguar bats came out screaming in their second game, putting up 10 runs. de Toledo carried a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning, an inning in which they tallied a remarkable seven runs. Ethan Stubington became the first baserunner of the inning with a single line drive to left field. With two outs and Stubington still holding at first, Omri Alon (2 SB), who has a penchant for getting on base with two outs this season, struck a line drive to left to advance Stubington to second. Jesse Spencer (1-2, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, 2 SB) then walloped the the pitch on a 2-2 count for a triple out to left field, that scored the two baserunners and gave de Toledo the five-run lead. During the following at-bat, Spencer scurried home after the pitcher threw a wild pitch. Louie Shapiro (1-2, 2 R, 2 BB, SB), Adam Neinstein, and Jacob Willinger (1-3, R, 2 RBI, BB) then loaded the bases for Sam Koeppel. Koeppel followed through with a ground ball that was fumbled by the second baseman, scoring Shapiro. Jared Browne did the same for the Jaguars in the next plate appearance, this time with the shortstop committing the error, allowing de Toledo to widen the gap to 10-0.

The Jaguar arms matched the bats, as Jacob Willinger held High Tech High scoreless over four innings pitched. The Storm could only muster a single hit off of Willinger whose command and curveball were devastating his opponents. Nine of the 17 batters Willinger faced were put out in three pitches or less, which contributed to keeping his pitch count low, which was key for his availability to pitch on Thursday. High Tech High hit a sub-one batting average (.077) against Willinger, a true testament to his consistent performance. The combination of Neinstein, Samson Goldman, and Shapiro finished off what Willinger started over the last three innings.

The Jaguars still have to play Hoover High School (San Diego) tomorrow to end pool play, however, they have already advanced to the semifinal, as they are now guaranteed to finish in the top spot in the pool, regardless of tomorrow’s result. de Toledo is looking to win the tournament in consecutive seasons after finishing as champions last season for the first time in school history.
