Acclaimed Theatre Director Raymond Saar Making an Impact at dTHS

Did you know that de Toledo High School’s acclaimed new Theatre Director, Raymond Saar, has himself enjoyed starring roles on some of the most prestigious stages in the world – including in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables on Broadway, and the National Tour of The King and I?

Under Ray’s tutelage, our Performing Arts students have a unique opportunity to discover their inner artistry – and in the process – cultivate their own sense of identity, self-confidence, and self-expression.

The continuing impact Ray is making at dTHS was recently on full view for our community to see in our school’s signature musical of the year – a one-of-a-kind adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods.

INTO THE WOODS with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine premiered on Broadway in 1987 and won three Tony Awards. The story intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. The main characters include Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella who are bound together by a story involving a childless baker and his wife and a witch who has placed a curse on them.

As you might imagine, Ray’s vision of Into the Woods required a wide range of talents and artistic vision. Every member of both cast and crew created "moments in the woods" filled with such depths of emotion that everyone has been thinking about this performance long after they return home.
