de Toledo traveled down to San Diego for a four-day tournament and returns home as champions
de Toledo 13 - El Cajon Valley 3
The Jaguar bats were hushed early on before Omri Alon cracked the scoring spree open with a three-run hit. The team then began to swing the bat with confidence, scoring an additional ten runs, forcing the mercy rule. Sam Koeppel and Jared Shapiro were especially potent going 2-3 (both hits for triples) with 3 RBI and 2-3 with 3 Runs, respectively. Starting pitcher Jonah Weisberg held the El Cajon Valley batters in check through five innings before handing it off to Jacob Willinger for the final two innings of play.
de Toledo 16 - Temecula Prep 5
After a stellar pitching performance in the first game of the tournament, Jonah Weisberg, this time, did his damage with the lumber, going 4-4 with 3 RBI. Omri Alon continued to strike the ball well with a 3-4 showing with an RBI. Jared Shapiro was a constant on the base path, scoring 3 Runs. Freshman starting pitcher Ethan Stubington stymied Temecula Prep in his four innings on the mound before the game was passed off to the bullpen. Ethan Hamburg brilliantly clawed his way out of a jam, putting the finishing touch on an outstanding team campaign. Ezra Krieger and Elliot Miller stepped up to the plate for the first time in their high school careers, debuting at the spring tournament.
de Toledo 6 - Hoover 4
For the second consecutive game, de Toledo relied on a freshman arm to lead them to victory, and to ultimately qualify for the Division 1A championship game. Jacob Willinger pitched a complete game, going seven innings and letting up four runs -- all in the seventh inning, proving how difficult it is to close out a game at any level. Willinger stifled Hoover, the alma mater of baseball great Ted Williams, through the first six innings with uncanny composure for a first-year player. Adam Neinstein supported Willinger's outing with a superior 3-4 2 Runs and 1 RBI evening. Sam Koeppel and Omri Alon were once again a presence in the game, reaching base a combined 4 times on 7 chances. Carson Kirshbaum smoked a ball for an RBI to add to the Jaguar tally.
de Toledo 3 - Escondido Charter 2 (CHAMPIONSHIP GAME)
The Jaguars were held scoreless through five innings by a steady stocky southpaw starter that was a thorn in the Jaguar's side for the majority of the game. Escondido Charter's starting pitcher also contributed on both of their runs with his bat, running a one-man machine. de Toledo had the perfect antidote with a similarly capable starting pitcher and timely hitting. Coach Jeff Feldman went with his veteran leader Jonah Weisberg on the mound in the championship game. Weisberg has been sensational at his showings at the tournament and at non-league games earlier this season, which made the decision an easy one for coach. Weisberg proved coach correct with five quality innings, while surrendering 2 earned runs. Ethan Stubington relieved Weisberg in the top of the sixth with a clean inning, but it was in the bottom of the sixth where the turnaround occurred. After struggling to get on base all day, the Jaguars started to get to Escondido Charter's stingy pitcher. Weisberg equaled his brilliance on the mound with his sixth-inning at bat, showing a glimpse of the pitcher's vulnerability by sending one in play for de Toledo's first RBI of the game. Jared Shapiro, who was named Tournament MVP after the game, had the go-ahead hit on a liner to right center that grazed the upper portion of the right fielder's glove before falling dramatically to the grass, which brought in two runs for the Jaguars. Stubington showed otherworldly poise in closing out the game with the game-tying runner on third and lead-changing runner on second by climactically freezing the batter on a game-ending strikeout.
This is the first time in the school's history that de Toledo has won the Lions Tournament Division 1A Championship.
