Girls Varsity Soccer claims first win of the season with a bombardment of goals

Girls Varsity Soccer (1-1 overall)

de Toledo 4 - Whittier Christian 1

After being blanked in their first game of the season, the Jaguars kick started their scoring ways with an impressive four-goal showing. Senior Maya Hayun, who has a penchant for finding the back of the net, scored two on the day to open and close the scoring. Hayun set up Tatiana Cait for the third goal of the game, who had earlier in the game assisted freshman Mikaela Harnoy for her first high school score. Harnoy returned the favor on the final goal, finding Hayun for the ender.

Boys Varsity Soccer (0-0-1 overall)

de Toledo 1 - Shalhevet 1

The Jaguars opened their season with a back-and-forth tilt that saw heavy midfield possession with few offensive pushes. The seldom offensive attacks from both teams were daunting at first, but were extinguished soon thereafter with the defensive back’s solid technical effort. de Toledo broke through early in the second half on a beautiful lob into the box from Natie Freson that was finished by freshman Yahav Arviv. The goaltending trio of Dylan Benson, Bernie Lavender, and Omri Alon held the Firehawks in check, but a bit over halfway through the second, Shalhevet headed in the tying goal, and from there the score stood still until the whistle. Being the first game of the season, the coaches treated the game as a showcase and inserted all of the players into the action to see what each one of them can contribute to the team this season and beyond. Based on this first effort, things look bright.

Girls Varsity Basketball (0-2 overall, 0-1 in league)

de Toledo 20 - Villanova Prep 71

The de Toledo Girls Basketball team continues to get better and better as the game progresses, however, early deficits have been a stumbling block. The Jaguars fought on every possession and brought contagious energy to the game. Lulu Marsh, a senior leader for the team, was diving for loose balls, putting the team’s will ahead of her own. Maia Chameides followed that model by aggressively snagging boards and setting unpassable screens that immobilized defenders. Sarah Goldstein, playing as her crafty self, swiped a ball from Villanova before converting the final basket with under two seconds remaining. The Jaguars are looking for a program turnaround and it is efforts such as today’s that have them moving in the right direction.

Boys JV Basketball (0-2 overall)

de Toledo 30 - Pilibos 75
