de Toledo stands out at their first league playoff

Southern California Youth Ultimate Tournament
de Toledo 4-11 Wildfire
de Toledo 7-13 Riptide

The de Toledo Ultimate team wrapped up its first season at the Southern California Youth Ultimate tournament this past weekend.

Our first game was a rematch against Wildfire, a team we had lost to earlier this season. Wildfire jumped out to an early 4-1 lead on the strength of their crisp, turnover-free offense. After a timeout, the de Toledo offense settled, scoring two in a row to bring the game within one. Unfortunately, that momentum wouldn’t hold as Wildfire went on a run of their own to bring their lead to 6-3, scoring on a legendary 12-minute point to take control of the game. The de Toledo defense was able to force 10 turnovers from Wildfire, but couldn’t punch in the critical score. Wildfire’s practiced offensive sets were effective in getting their cutters open, and the de Toledo defense found itself constantly behind, scoring only one break in the entire game. Ezra Krieger paced the team with three assists and five blocks. Elan Nadelman filled out the stat sheet with three blocks as well as a goal and an assist. Wildfire won 11-4, ending the game on a 5-1 run.

After that loss, the Jaguars dropped to the consolation bracket where we faced off one more time against Santa Monica Riptide. For the first time all season, de Toledo scored first, holding on the opening point of the game. The teams traded holds until the score was tied at 3-3, at which point Riptide went on a 3-goal run into halftime. de Toledo again had a clean point on the first point of the second half, as junior Josh Freson recorded a block and caught a breakaway goal. Freson made his mark on defense collecting three blocks as well as scoring two goals in this game. The two teams traded holds on each of their next two possessions before Riptide ripped off a 3-0 run to close out the game, winning 13-7.

Every player on the team recorded at least one goal, block, or assist over the two games, and the players were commended by opposing coaches and local elite players who came to watch the tournament for their development, efforts, and talent as a first year team.

We look forward to coming back next season with more experience under our collective belt and a hunger to improve. If you are interested in joining the team, please contact Alex Rubin for more information.
