de Toledo comes shy of a win in an 18-13 loss to Vistamar

Boys Varsity Flag Football (1-1)

de Toledo 13 - Vistamar 18

In their first road test of the season, the Jaguars traveled far to El Segundo to take on Vistamar. The two teams faced each other three times last season with de Toledo coming out of all games victorious, including last year’s semifinal match-up. But on this occasion, Vistamar found a way to pull away late in the fourth after the Jaguars took a 13-12 lead into the final quarter.

The Vikings hit first on their opening drive after holding the Jaguars to a three-and-out. de Toledo then answered back with two straight touchdowns of their own. The first points of the game for de Toledo came by a short pass from Yarden Leshem to Brennan Ratican in the same fashion as the game-clinching touchdown in the previous game against Shalhevet. Evan Rose also scored his second touchdown of the season during the game, by gliding past the corner on the outside and catching a perfectly lofted ball to the far end of the end zone. Rose planted his feet just in bounds and the ball fell directly into his basket catch. Vistamar then answered with two deep ball scores that sailed over the de Toledo cornerback. The Jaguars pushed down the field with an opportunity to take the lead with less than a minute left in the game, however, Vistamar was able to clamp down de Toledo on the ensuing four plays to end the game.

The de Toledo defense continued to make plays, as they picked off three passes. Leshem snagged two of his own, including one in the end zone to close out an extra point attempt. Rose converted the other interception on the day, picking a ball of on the margin of the field and returning it for a solid 10-yard gain. The defensive front, despite not getting as much pressure in this game as the last one, still impacted the game, forcing the quarterback to overloft the passes that the secondary turned over. Ethan Minkow tallied a sack for the second consecutive game, showing that the intensity he brings to practices is translating over to his play during games.
