dTHS Medical Science Academy Students in Tanzania
Even during these unimaginably difficult times, the work of de Toledo to make our world a better place continues… and we are so proud to share that four of our students are currently in the African nation of Tanzania… where they are supporting a surgical team performing emergency surgeries for children in need.
As part of de Toledo’s unique Medical Science Academy, seniors Jessie L. (’24), Jordyn S. (’24), Sammy K. (’24), and Charlotte H. (’24), are on this life-saving medical mission with the Los Angeles-based nonprofit MendingKids.org (MK).
The de Toledo Medical Science Academy is a three-year specialized course of study encompassing college preparatory academics, lab work, surgery internships, and international medical missions for students interested in pursuing careers in medicine or nursing.
While in Tanzania, the four de Toledo students have the opportunity to be in the surgical suite, observe surgeries, and engage with patients and their family members.
Michael Rayhan, de Toledo’s Medical Science Academy director, who is leading our students in Tanzania, believes that “the firsthand experiences our students gain on these types of missions – including having unfiltered exposure to medical fieldwork and global health delivery abroad – are invaluable and empowering.”
Helping in the process of providing care to children who require urgent surgery and who otherwise would have little access to specialized medical services will be something our students remember for the rest of their lives!
Located in the San Fernando Valley portion of the City of Los Angeles in Northern Los Angeles County. de Toledo High School is accredited by the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS), the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and Builders of Jewish Education (BJE,) and financially supported by the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles and the Jim Joseph Foundation.
