Boys Varsity Basketball Moves On to the CIF-SS Quartefinals

de Toledo opens with a strong first half to put away Mojave High School, 64-43

de Toledo 64 - Mojave 43

The Jaguars defeated Mojave, 64-43, to advance to the CIF-SS Division 5A Quarterfinals. de Toledo started the game as immaculate as can be, seemingly sinking every shot within the first five minutes of the game, while forcing Mojave into turning over the ball. Their commitment to playing tight on the man led to countless forced turnovers that gave the team open drives to the hoop. Mojave could not adjust to the pressure, despite making a run of their own in the third, with the Jaguars clamping down on the Mustangs, especially in the fourth when the Jaguars regained a significant lead. Mojave turned the ball over a soul-crushing 18 times, playing frazzled in a frenzy.

Liam Evenhaim, the only player on the team to have played in a postseason game prior to the opening of this playoff, scored a whopping 36 points. Evenhaim tallied the first double-double of the postseason for the Jaguars with 11 boards to accompany his scoring output; he also had four blocks and three steals in the game. Aaron Heisen was instrumental to the Jaguars’ flow on offense, making crisp passes (team-leading six assists), skying high for rebounds, and cutting to the basket for high-percentage looks at crucial points in the game. Aidan Nussbaum’s high energy was on full display, as he scored nine points, swiped six steals, and deflected four passes.

de Toledo will now face Western Christian on Thursday night. The winning team will advance to the Semifinals to face the winner of Arroyo Valley/New Roads.
