de Toledo Baseball leads off the season with a dominant performance against Shalhevet, 14-3

Boys Varsity Baseball (1-0 overall)

de Toledo 14 - Shalhevet 3 (F/5 - Mercy)

de Toledo opened the season with a convincing victory against Shalhevet, 14-3. The Jaguars are coming off of their most successful season, in which they came a run shy of the CIF-SS Division 7 Championship Game.

The Jaguars took control of the game in the third inning, putting up six runs in the bottom of the frame. de Toledo led off the inning with three straight singles by Jesse Spencer, Sam Koeppel, and Ethan Stubington, with Spencer scoring off Stubington’s crack for the first run of the inning. Jared Browne then hit a sac fly to right field to score Koeppel and advance Stubington to third. Aiden Schenck followed with a line drive to center to bring Stubington to home plate. The Shalhevet pitcher then walked the bases loaded before Adam Neinstein hit a pop fly that the right fielder misplayed for an error, bringing all three Jaguar baserunners home for the sixth run of the inning.

Jacob Willinger took the mound on Opening Day for the Jaguars after earning the #3 starter position last year and starting the CIF-SS Semifinal Game. Willinger continued his dominance from last year, facing 15 batters and giving up three unearned runs. Willinger pitched strikes on the first pitch of the at-bat against 13 of the 15 batters, striking out six Firehawks through 3.1 innings. In two of those innings, Willinger started the inning by getting the first two batters out, limiting Shalhevet’s run-producing ability. Max Turndorf relieved Willinger in the fourth inning, pitching the final 1.2 innings, surrendering a meager two hits.

The Jaguar bats came out in full force to support the excellent pitching performance. Senior catcher Sam Koeppel sparked the Jaguars’ offense with a 2-3 showing with three runs scored. Carson Kirshbaum and Omri Alon led de Toledo in RBIs with two a piece. Kirshbaum was speeding on the base path, stealing third base for his first of the season. Alon showed great patience at the plate, seeing 20 pitches in three plate appearance, including two at-bats in which he took at least six pitches.

The team’s promising start shows that the high expectations set for them are attainable. The team was moved up to Division 6 this year, due to their results over the last two seasons, and were ranked the #10 team in the division in the preseason rankings (despite not having yet played a game in the division).

Boys Varsity Tennis (0-1 overall, 0-1 league)

de Toledo 5 - Milken 13

The Jaguars opened their season with a home loss to Milken, 5-13. Noah Anish led all de Toledo singles players on the day, sweeping his three matches. Dylan Bookbinder came close to perfection, claiming two out of three matches. Bookbinder’s sole loss came in an extremely close tiebreaker that came down to the final points.
