Boys Varsity Baseball opens the season 2-0, beating Cate 6-5 in Carpinteria

Boys Varsity Baseball (2-0 overall)

de Toledo 6 - Cate 5

The Jaguars traveled to Carpinteria to take on Cate, their CIF-SS Quarterfinal opponent from last year’s postseason that they defeated to advance to the Semis. de Toledo eked out a close one-run win with Cate climbing back in the game from a four-run deficit before the Jaguars added an insurance run in the top of the sixth.

Whereas de Toledo came out of the gates screaming on offense in their last game against Shalhevet with nine runs in the first three innings, it took the Jaguars a couple of innings for their bats to come to play, as they first struck in the top of the third inning with two runs. Freshman Jesse Spencer (2-3, 1 R, 2 RBI) brought in the first run of the game, hitting the ball past the shortstop to score Adam Neinstein (2-4, 2 R, 1 RBI), who was on third base after stealing the base earlier in the at-bat. Ethan Stubington (1-3, 2 RBI) came to the plate next and doubled on a fly ball to center field to bring Jesse Spencer home. The bats were hushed in the fourth inning, but the Jaguars tatooed the Cate pitching in the fifth inning for a inning-best three runs. With the first two batters of the inning getting on base, Louie Shapiro and Omri Alon, Neinstein, at the top of the order, hit a single to bring Shapiro to the plate. Alon and Neinstein were brought home by sacrifice hits, a bunt by Spencer and a sac fly by Stubington, respectively, bringing the score to 5-1. Cate’s bats came alive in the bottom of the frame, putting up three runs to bring the game within a run. The Jaguars scored an insurance run in the top of the sixth off of a line drive double from Louie Shapiro that scored Aidan Schenck.

Ethan Stubington took the mound for de Toledo, pitching five complete innings before being taken out in the sixth inning. Stubington faced 24 of the 27 Cate batters that came to the plate on Thursday, striking out one batter and giving up five runs. Adam Neinstein and Jacob Willinger came in the sixth and seventh, respectively, to relieve Stubington with a hitless effort. Willinger came in the bottom of the sixth to close the door with a quick 1-2-3 showing.

The Jaguars, as a team, stole an astounding eight bases without being caught stealing, led by Spencer’s three on the game. Jared Browne, Neinstein, Schenck, Shapiro, and Adam Schreiber swiped a single base. Their speed on the base path is adding another element to their game, making them an even more formidable opponent.
