Boys Varsity Baseball sweeps Milken; wins 5-2

Boys Varsity Baseball (5-1 overall, 2-0 league)

de Toledo 5 - Milken 2 (Friday Special)

de Toledo swept the season series against Milken by a combined score of 15-2, with Friday’s victory coming on the road. The Jaguars got the offense working early, scoring four of their total five runs in the initial inining. Jared Browne (2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB) started the scoring by singling down the third base line to score two-hole hitter Adam Neinstein -- Browne was pummeling the ball on Friday with great cracks during all four of his at-bats. Browne then stole second -- one of de Toledo’s six stolen bases during the game. Adam Schreiber followed by advancing Browne to third on a ground ball to the shortstop that was misplayed, leading to the Jaguars with men on first and third. The Milken pitcher tried to catch the Jaguars off-guard by attempting to pick off Schreiber at first, however, the pitcher’s errant throw thwarted that attempt, and instead allowed Browne to scoot on home for the two-run lead. Milken committed another error during Sam Koeppel’s at-bat, as the second baseman tallied one of Milken’s seven fielding errors. With men on first and second, Omri Alon forced a walk to fill the bases. The pitcher then threw a wild pitch, scoring Schreiber and Koeppel. Alon, in an attempt to advance to second on the play, was caught stealing to end the fruitful inning. The Jaguars scored their fifth and final run of the game in the third inning, as Schreiber stole second and third base before scoring on an error by the third baseman.

Jacob Willinger took the mound for the Jaguars and pitched five quality innings for the team. Willinger fooled the Wildcats with a stifling breaking ball that either froze the batters or caused them to look silly in an attempt to contact the pitch. His stuff led to 11 swing and misses by Milken’s batters and resulted in a .188 batting average against. Adam Neinstein came in for a two-inning appearance, breezing through the sixth inning before allowing two runs in the seventh.
