Boys Varsity Baseball defeats Oakwood in their final home game of the regular season, 11-4

Boys Varsity Baseball (9-4 overall, 6-3 league)

de Toledo 11 - Oakwood 4

de Toledo celebrated Senior Day with an 11-4 victory over Oakwood in what may be the final home game for the team’s graduating class. It didn’t take long for the Jaguars to make an imprint on the game, as their top two run-producing innings came in the first and second frames. Down one in the bottom of the first and having already committed two outs to start the inning, Ethan Stubington (2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 2B, 2 SB) smoked his first of two doubles to left field to become the team’s first baserunner. Jared Browne (2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB) kept the inning alive with a hard grounder to left that scored Stubington to tie the game. Browne soon thereafter stole second before Sam Koeppel (3-4, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 2B, 5 TB) drove him home with a double that flew over the first baseman into shallow right. Carson Kirshbaum (3-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, SB), on the next at-bat, hit a hard ball past the shortstop to score Koeppel. The Jaguars scored their final run of the inning when Omri Alon (3-4, 3 RBI -- all with 2 outs) singled to shallow left center to bring home Kirshbaum and to give de Toledo a 4-1 lead.

The Gorillas were able to get two runs back in the top of the second to bring the game within one run, but the Jaguars answered quickly, putting up an additional five runs in the inning. The Jaguars opened the inning with the bases loaded, as Max Turndorf reached base on an error, Adam Neinstein singled to left field, and Jacob Willinger was given the base after being hit by the pitch. Stubington hit into a fielder’s choice to score Turndorf and to advance the other baserunners. Browne followed by hitting a single beyond third base, allowing Neinstein time to reach home. Koeppel then smacked a ground ball to right field to score Stubington and to pad de Toledo’s lead to four runs. The bases were loaded once again in the bottom of the second for the Jaguars, and Alon converted with a single up the middle to bring in Browne and Koeppel for a daunting 9-3 margin.

Stubington took the mound for de Toledo, pitching 6.2 innings and giving up one earned run. His confidence and command grew as the game progressed, as he was able to axe 21 Gorilla batters in three pitches or less and posted a 6:0 K:BB ratio. Stubington opened three of his innings pitched by getting the first two batters out. Oakwood also had great difficulty in reading his pickoff attempts, as his chicanery led to two Oakwood baserunners being picked off at first. Max Turndorf came in relief to face the final batter and was able to put him out in a single effortless pitch.
