San Diego Lions Baseball Tournament Game 1 Recap: de Toledo 1 - Channel Islands 0

de Toledo opens the San Diego Lions Baseball Tournament with a 1-0 victory

Boys Varsity Baseball (11-4 overall, 7-3 league)

de Toledo 1 - Channel Islands 0 (Lions Tournament Division 2A Pool Play)

The Jaguars opened the San Diego Lions Baseball Tournament in a pitcher’s duel with de Toledo sliding past Channel Islands, 1-0. de Toledo’s offense began to turn it on after the third inning, but they were unable to advance runners home, partly due to Channel Islands’ defensive prowess, but also to being on the short side of the “luck stick”. The Jaguars were ripping balls that would seemingly beam straight into palms of the Channel Islands fielders, as if a super-magnet were hidden under their leather. In the seventh inning, the Jaguars, who were playing a more complete game of the two sides, finally broke through. Omri Alon started the inning with a patient walk, and soon thereafter, Jesse Spencer (2-3) singled to advance Alon to second. During the next at-bat, de Toledo successfully executed a double steal, as Alon sped to third and Spencer blazed to second. With both runners in scoring position, Adam Neinstein (1-4, 1 RBI) smoked a line drive to left field that brought in Alon for the decisive run. The team raced after Neinstein, dousing him with the whatever remained in the water bottles, in pure elation.

Ethan Stubington’s pitching performance kept the game within reach, as he pitched a complete game three-hit shutout. He put the game on his shoulders and then some, even laying out for a double play off of a popped up bunt that turned the momentum in de Toledo’s favor. As has become the norm, he picked off another runner with his quick deceptive turn to first base. Stubington did not allow Channel Islands (.143 BAA) to get it going at any point, starting five of the seven innings with two straight outs and axing out all three batters in order during three of those innings.

de Toledo now rests at the top of the pool, a requirement to advance to Thursday’s semifinal game. Should the Jaguars win their next two pool play games, they will be guaranteed a spot in the penultimate game of the tournament, with the chance to repeat as champions later that day.
