San Diego Lions Baseball Tournament Game 3 Recap: de Toledo 9 - Hoover (San Diego) 2

Jaguars finish a perfect 3-0 in pool play on their way to the Division 2A Lions Tournament Semifinals

Boys Varsity Baseball (13-4 overall, 7-3 league)

de Toledo 9 - Hoover (San Diego) 2 (Lions Tournament Division 2A Pool Play)

The Jaguars finished a perfect 3-0 in pool play to advance to the Division 2A Semifinals after a handling of Hoover on their home field. de Toledo, who knew as of last night that they were going to progress on to the next round, did not let up despite this knowledge, against a winless team in the pool. Spot starter Max Turndorf turned in his most impressive performance to date with a complete game. With de Toledo’s top two pitchers unavailable due to the required rest time after reaching a certain pitch limit, Turndorf mimicked the best appearances from them, composedly racking up eight strikeouts on his way to a sure-fire victory. He made quick work of Hoover, getting 19 of the 28 batters faced out within three pitches, which helped him remain consistent as the game went on.

The offense backed up Turndorf one run shy of their total from the previous game. de Toledo’s lineup crushed Hoover’s pitching in the second inning for a game-high four runs. With a 1-0 lead entering the top of the second, Jared Browne (2-4, R) singled on a pop fly to right field. Omri Alon (1-3, R) followed hitting a playable pop fly to right, however, the right fielder fumbled the ball and Alon reached safe at first and advanced Browne to second. Jesse Spencer (0-1, 3 R, 2 BB, SB)  then hit into a fielder’s choice, which took the lead runner off the base path, but established men on first and second once again. With two outs, Aidan Schenck (3-3, R, 2 RBI, 2 SB) delivered a punch to right field to score Alon, for the 2-0 margin. Jacob Willinger (1-3, R, RBI) then followed suit with liner to right that landed and then was misplayed by the fielder, allowing Spencer and Schenck to reach home. Adam Neinstein (0-2, R, 2 BB, SB) and Sam Koeppel (0-2, R, 2 SB) then loaded the bases for Ethan Stubington (3-3, 3 RBI) with a walk and hit by pitch, respectively. Stubington was consequently hit by another pitch, which walked in Willinger from third for the final run of the inning for the 5-0 lead.

The Jaguars will take on Valley Academy of Arts & Sciences in the semifinals at 9:30 AM PST on Thursday, April 18. Should the Jaguars come out of that game on top, they will face the winner of the Heritage Christian/Escondido Charter game at 3:30 PM PST the same day.
