Ultimate Frisbee Team's Opener Recap

Alex Rubin
The newly-built Ultimate Frisbee Team played their first match on Sunday against La Canada-Flintridge.

de Toledo 5 - La Canada-Flintridge 13

The de Toledo ultimate team played its first game in team history on Sunday morning against La Canada-Flintridge Wildfire. The team played admirably in a 13-5 loss, showing a lot of growth over the course of the game, and providing building blocks to improve upon in coming weeks.

Wildfire started the game on a 3-0 run and looked like the more polished team from the start. de Toledo eventually got over its early-game jitters and clamped down on defense to stop their run. The Jaguars used a fast-break style offense to spring free Elan Nadelman in the middle of the field; his throw to the back corner of the end zone was caught by Josh Freson for the first goal in team history.

The de Toledo offense was run through brothers Brennan and Cooper Ratican. Brennan was a rock in the backfield, launching throws all over the field. Cooper acted as a valuable reset and helped out on defense too, knocking the disc into the stands for a dramatic block late in the game. Junior Gabe Kaufman carved up the middle of the field, finding easy throws for his teammates to move the disc.

Wildfire took half 8-3, and de Toledo huddled to make some adjustments. In the second half, Jonah Weisner initiated the downfield offense with decisive cuts and always kept an eye downfield looking for a fast break. Carson Kirshbaum made some tough catches in traffic to keep possession alive multiple times, and the entire team played progressively tighter defense, forcing Wildfire to work for every throw. The last three points of the game each featured 5+ turnovers. Though the de Toledo offense did not take advantage of every opportunity, the defense carried the way and kept the game competitive throughout.

This loss brings the team’s record to 0-1. The team is looking forward to getting more game-like reps in practice and building towards the league’s playoff tournament on June 2.
