New Op-Ed by dTHS Head of School Mark Shpall

We are very proud to share that the Jewish Journal newspaper has today published an op-ed by de Toledo’s Head of School, Mark Shpall.

Entitled “The Jewish Story Doesn’t Fit on a Smartphone:  We Must Reclaim It”, the piece articulates several core principles on Jewish education, starting with the power of the word “and.”  At de Toledo, we know that Judaism is family. And it’s tradition. And it’s religion.  And culture.  And language.  And pride, happiness, and a love of life.   And a love of learning. And generosity, justice, strength, and peace.

At the same time, especially after October 7th and amidst a wave of antisemitic delegitimization across the world, we empower our kids with the confidence and inspiration they need to stand up, speak out, and weave the Jewish narratives of their own lives.  Because if our kids don’t learn to tell their own stories, others will.

That’s why, here at de Toledo, we validate the merits of tradition in a modern world.  And we offer our students a myriad of ways to connect interpersonally with their Jewish peers.  And find real community and a sense of security.  And be equipped with Jewish wisdom, and steeped in custom, and comfortable in ritual. And eager to live a Jewish life committed to compassion, tolerance, and understanding.
